(In college and high school once a coach gets a football program going, the only way for it to go backwards is for the coach to get lax.)
In college and high school, the goal is not only to get that particular schools football program going it is also to keep the program running and healthy.
When I say “healthy” what I mean is that if the coach that builds the program goes off to a better job then the one the comes after is there to be a program “manager.”
What “manager” means is to not do any harm to the program. It means that there should not be no significant changes to how the program is being run.
A good example of this is St. John. Brad Villaboso built this program and then he moved on. St. John has been through several and in all of the cases, has keep on winning. The program has even survived the grades scandal of Eric Willis’s last stint here as the coach.
The general feel is that once a successful program is built, then you are to let the program run.
